The town of Zvolen (German: Altsohl, Hungarian: Zólyom) is located in the central part of Slovakia, about 20 kilometers from Banská Bystrica.
Dominating the town of Zvolen, the Zvolen castle was originally built in gothic style in the 14th century, and later reconstructed in renaissance style in the 16th century.
The castle has a rectangular shape with four wings surrounding the central courtyard. In its royal hall there is an interesting coffered ceiling painted with the portraits of 78 Roman and Habsburg emperors.
The castle presently functions as a museum, Slovak National Gallery collections are displayed here.
