What to do in Bratislava - Slovakia

Sightseeing

The city's historical centre has been beautifuly renovated and has a great atmosphere with history tangled up everywhere.

The Gothic St.Martin's Cathedral saw coronation of 19 Hungarian kings and queens.

The unique design of the Bratislava Castle reminds of an flipped-over table on a hill above the Danube river and offers great views of the city.
Another favourite view-point is the medieval St.Michael's Gate, the watchtower of the original city fortification.

The fairy-tale Old Town Hall with the clock tower and the romantic courtyard with arcades houses the City Museum.

A unique collection of tapestries telling a tragic story of ancient Greek lovers Leander and Hero is presented in the Classical Primate's Palace.

The masterpiece of the Bratislava Rococo, the Mirbach's Palace, houses several historical works of graphic arts.

Visitors are free to wander the Presidential Palace's manicured gardens.

The Opera House located in a lively square nearby the fancy Philharmonic building, surrounded by trendy restaurants and luxury hotels, rivals any renowned Eropean opera houses with its legendary opera productions.

Dining and Night Life

The modern Bratislava is full of lively cafes, upscale shops and inviting restaurants open to strolling tourists.

Coffee lovers gather in the Vienna-style cafes that line the streets of the Old Town.

These are adjoined by a number of restaurants offering cheap Slovak cuisine - similar to the German one using pototoes, sauerkraut and cheese - but most of them serve fine international cuisine at really reasonable rates. Accompanied by typical local wines such as Tokaj, Riesling or Frankovka or distinctive Slovak beer you can enjoy true culinary experiences.

Bratislava is also famous for its pulsing night life. The city centre is loaded with trendy clubs and bars or jazz cafes. You can find quite a few of them along the lively Obchodna street.

No visitor should miss the UFO restaurant / club atop the New Bridge, that reminds of a flying saucer. It offers great meals, large selection of coctails and drinks along with the best views of the city.

Trips and Excursions

Bratislava's surroundings offer attractions to be explored by curious tourists as well.

The nearby romantic ruins of the medieval Devin Castle on a hill above the confluence of Danube and Morava rivers are reachable either by boats or public buses.
The Galeria Danubiana, a unique modern art museum located 15 km (10 miles) is located southeast of Bratislava and is also accessible by public transportation.

Travel agencies organise guided tours along the Small Carpathian Wine Route connected with wine tasting, visits of ancient royal wine towns and the wonderfully preserved Cerveny Kamen Castle.

Vienna, only 60 km away, is a perfect destination for a one-day trip. To get there you can either take one of the busses running regularly from the Novy Most stop in the Old Town or a boat. High speed boats the Twin City Liners are connecting the two cities four times a day.
