Velky Kamenec

Veľký Kamenec Castle

The village of Veľký Kamenec (Hungarian: Nagykövesd) is located in the southeastern part of Slovakia, about 15 km west of Kráľovský Chlmec.

Veľký Kamenec’s most important attractions are the ruins of its medieval castle and the former Fischer Mansion.

The Veľký Kamenec Castle, rising on the side of a hill, probably dated from the end of the 13th century; it was first mentioned in 1323.

The castle stood until 1673 – when it was blown up by the imperial troops in reprisal to the Wesselényi Conspiracy. Its ruins can be seen from afar.

The remnants of the castle were used to build the Catholic Church which stands on the side of the hill under the castle, as well as the mansion of the Szirmai-Fischer family.
