Originally, the castle was Gothic castle and it was erected during the period 1137. The castle was first owned by Ditrich, who donned the role of the head related to the Zvolen County and who belonged to the Knight Donc family.

At its best known times, the Modrý Kameň Castle was a significant structure in the Kingdom of Hungary, and the castle played the role of anti-Turk defensive line during the earlier periods. But during the period that extended between 1575 and 1593, the Turks took control of the castle, as they destroyed the castle too. After the turn of the Turks, the family related to Balassa paved way for some repair works of this castle which again fell to the ire of Turks. The upper castle remains to be in ruins since the time of Turkish attacks.

A manor house had been built by the Balassa family in the lower part pertaining to the castle area during the year 1730, and ever since then, the manor house and the castle hasn’t witnessed much of changes. The manor house at the Modrý Kameň Castle now houses Museum of Puppets and Toys, which is the only one belonging to its type in Slovakia. There are exhibitions that get conducted at the Modrý Kameň Castle, as visitors can come by several festivals and events getting organized at this castle with much fanfare.
