Getting around in Bratislava

Bratislava has an extensive system of public transportation. However, the historical centre of the city is a pedestrian and is easily walkable. To get to other parts of the city you can use buses, trolley-buses or trams, unless you want to take a taxi.

Before using one of the means of public transportation, make sure you buy a ticket. There are two basic types of tickets – a 10 minute ticket at 14 SKK and a 30 minute ticket at 18 SKK. These can be bought at kiosks and newsstands as well as dispenser machines taking Slovak coins at most bus stops.
The tickets have to be punched after boarding the bus, otherwise they are not valid. Ticket inspectors are very often checking tickets on the lines mostly frequented by tourists – from Bratislava Airport, Main Train Station or Bus Station to downtown. They fine more than 1000 SKK for not having a valid ticket.

How to get to:

Downtown from Bratislava Airport – take bus no. 61 to the terminal Hlavna zeleznicna stanica (Main Train Station) and follow the instructions below.

Downtown from Main Train Station (Hlavna Stanica) - take bus no. 93 to Hodzovo namestie (second stop) or Zochova (third stop). You can also take tram no. 1 to Postova stop (fifth stop) - not riding till June 2006 because of constructions on the road - or tram no. 13 to Namestie L. Stura (final stop).

Downtown from Bus Station (Autobusova Stanica Mlynske Nivy) – take trolley-busses no. 202 or 205 to Rajska (final stop) behind the Tesco department store, no. 206 or 208 to Hodzovo namestie (fourth stop) at the Presidential Palace and Crowne Plaza Hotel, or bus no. 70 to Novy most (final stop) at the New Bridge and hotel Danube.

Downtown from the Petrzalka Train Station – take bus no. 93 to Zochova (fourth stop) or Hodzovo namestie (fifth stop), or bus no. 91 to Novy most (third stop).

Taxis / cabs are still cheap by western standards. Some drivers may try to cheat on tourists usually by not turning on the meter and overcharging, therefore make sure the meter is on when the taxi takes off.
As a reliable and reasonable airport taxi service (offering also pick-up from the Main Train Station and the Mlynske Nivy Bus Station) we recommend the Bratislava Airport Shuttle service.
It is not recommended to take a taxi from the Main Train station or Main Bus Station. The drivers waiting in front of the station are the most expensive ones in Bratislava. A ride of about 5 min. may cost more than 200 SKK.
